EXCEPTIONAL LEARNING
The Australian International School Malaysia defines Exceptional Learners as those students who require differentiated education in order to reach their full potential. Exceptional learners incorporate the following learners:
- Students who are gifted and talented
- Students who require learning support
- Students for whom English is a second language
GIFTED & TALENTED EDUCATION
Provisions for gifted students are integrated into the curriculum, as well as through co-curricular activities. A specialist teacher is responsible for overseeing and developing gifted programs and recognising that gifted students have divergent needs that require specific involvement.
Programs for gifted students are designed to address the social, emotional and academic needs of these students.
LEARNING SUPPORT
We accept a limited number of students with learning difficulties into the school. The school does not run specific classes for students with learning difficulties, but believes in the policy of inclusion and the need for students to develop skills for real life situations. Therefore all students accepted will be in a mainstream class and must be able to cope with the dynamics of such a class.
The school has a Learning Support Centre staffed by a Learning Support and a Literacy Support teacher. This centre assists the student and the class teacher to ensure that the needs and best interests of the student remain the focus.
All students will need to achieve a score of success on the pre-enrolment admissions test.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Students whose language background is one other than English are evaluated during the admissions process to determine whether they would require additional support. Students who are able to access the curriculum which is taught in English, are accepted into the school with or without ESL support. Supported students will be provided with ESL lessons to assist them to develop greater English proficiency.
The ESL support programme is chargeable in addition to the school fees. Most of these lessons are timetabled as small-group sessions based on the year level of the student. These lessons take place two or three periods per week and extra materials may be provided to support textbooks or assignments.
