INTERNATIONAL DAY 2006

In 2003 the SRC invited students to wear their national costumes for a special assembly held to mark International Children's Day. The enthusiastic response encouraged AISM to organise a full International Day in 2004 and in 2005, we made it even better. We've just topped it in 2006!

INTERNATIONAL DAY 30th August, 2006

30th August was chosen in 2004 as an appropriate day - it's the day before a public holiday,  for Malaysia's National Day, Hari Merdeka. The tradition continues in 2006, with bigger and better events.

Thanks to our great Parents' Committee, who worked with Mr Abu and his team to ensure that the day went smoothly. The Food was great, the Assembly was a great showcase of different cultures, and the Cultural displays gave a good peek into aspects of life in different countries from which we draw our students.

Our Malaysian students tell us about the spirit of Merdeka, Malaysian Independence Day, celebrated on 31st August.

The Assembly -  and some of our students' colourful costumes. We were also treated to performances by talented students and parents from countries as far apart as Columbia, India and Germany, as well as modern and traditional fare from Korea.

The Food!

This year, we were able to try food from 20 different countries or cultures. As each was sampled. we found out information to answer questions in our 'passports'.
See if you can guess which is which...

Passport Control!

Sports

Demonstrations of Akido and Cricket, as well as friendly ganes of Netball and Soccer added a bit of extra spice.

Costumes

Everyone wanted to show off their best national dress, or try out someone else's. French? Yes. Omani? Had that too. Lots of Malaysian, Korean and Japanese dress, and the variety of Aussie national dress was well.... lets just say 'various'

Oh, and we did see a couple of stray people out in the midday sun. Wonder where they came from?

Vertical grouping of all the students in their Houses ensured that everyone had either a little brother or sister to look after, or a 'big' one to look after them.

We had our own live Bush Band! We were treated to some traditional Aussie ballads.
