The offer of two
year academic scholarships for three Post-SPM
Malaysian students.
The
AISM Senior Scholarships – the first of their kind
to be awarded in Malaysia – are jointly offered by
AISM and Taylor’s University College. AISM is a
member of the Taylor’s Education Group. The
scholarship initially covers the recipient during
their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC). Successful
candidates may choose to continue on to a degree
programme at Taylor’s as part of the scholarship
package. This whole package would be valued at
RM200,000.
The Inaugural AISM Academic Scholarship was awarded
to Sabrina Lim; however, as the quality of the
candidates was so high, it was decided to award two
additional scholarships, to Chin Joe Yang in the
area of Science and Technology and Yeoh Wan Xin in
English and Humanities.
Mrs Armstrong has commended the students
awarded the scholarships in 2007/08, 2008/09 and
2009/2010 for the way they
have fitted in so well to the AISM community. All have shown great
personal commitment and academic achievement during
their time at AISM and the candidates from 2008/09
are currently sitting for their HSC exam which started
in mid October.
The scholarship offers are for a two year
matriculation course (Years 11 and 12) leading to
the Higher School Certificate. English is a
compulsory subject (offered at Advanced, Standard
and ESL levels) and students study either four or
five additional subjects. AISM currently offers
Mathematics, Mathematics Extension, General
Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Business
Studies, Economics, Modern History, Legal Studies,
Visual Arts, Design & Technology, Information
Processes and Technology and Malay for Background
Speakers. In addition, Digital Photography & Media
and PDHPE (Personal Development, Health & Physical
Education). The curriculum
is outcomes based with an emphasis on using learnt
knowledge to participate in discussions, analyse
issues and solve problems. This process forms an
essential part of the school’s internal assessment
of students’ performance, which is then submitted to
the Board of Studies and counts as 50% of their
Higher School Certificate result and University
Admission Index.
Upon successful completion of their
HSC, the scholars are eligible to go on to pursue a
3+0 degree programme in Business, Hospitality
Management or Communication Studies at Taylor’s.
Students may also use their HSC results to enter
universities in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada
and the United States.
Interested?
When applying for the
scholarship, you will need to supply a large amount
of information about your academic progress
including predicted SPM results as well as your
interests and talents. The scholarship examination
you will sit for if shortlisted, is based on the NSW
School Certificate so as to reflect the outcomes and
style of the Australian education system. Once the
examinations are marked candidates will again be
short listed and the successful candidates invited
to an interview with members of the Schools Division
of Taylor’s Education and members of the school
executive in mid December. During the interview, if you are one of
those selected, you will be invited to reflect on
your success and talk about how the opportunity of
an Australian International education would help you
to achieve your goals.
Once the interviews
are completed the merits of the candidates will be
discussed before the offers are made to the
successful applicants.
This scholarship offer is a
once-in-a-lifetime chance for young Malaysians to
understand and experience life and learning as part
of the multi-cultural community at one of the
nation’s most prestigious international schools.
It
was initiated for students to interact and study
alongside their peers from various parts of the
world, within a conducive and supportive learning
community.
Through
the award of the Pre-University Scholarship, we
believe AISM will provide deserving Malaysian
students with the opportunity to better develop
their talents, skills and confidence so that they
can develop their full potential.
