Our first Scholarship students - 2007/08

Yeoh Wan Xin (HSC 2008)
Wan Xin received offers from Universities in Sydney before accepting a Taylors University Malaysia Scholarship, to study Law.

One of my biggest discoveries at AISM was that none of the Aussies spoke like Steve Irwin. It was a little of a letdown initially, but then I discovered the rich and varied cultures and backgrounds of the students and learnt something important about life – that the things you hear or read about others cultures are never as exciting as experiencing it for yourself. I would say the same for the learning experience here. At AISM I learnt to think out of the box, to explore academic concepts by looking beyond the textbooks and classrooms, to construct meanings from any given text in ways that I can identify with, to find my voice. Beyond all that, I built relationships with friends, teachers and staff that I will remember for a long time after. AISM is for me, not just an educational institution, not just a stepping stone towards greater dreams, but a phase in my life that has shaped my outlook and my goals. And for that I shall forever be grateful to Taylors and AISM for having me this opportunity to grow.

Chin Joe Yang (HSC 2008)  Joe is currently a first year student in Melbourne University Victoria Australia – Bachelor of Science.

“Have you ever had the desire to travel out of the country? Being a Malaysian, as cultural as we are, there are hundreds of cultures around the world yet for us to experience. I personally learnt and experience the beauty of those cultures, and I didn’t even have to step out of Malaysia. I just spent two of my final high school years at the Australian International School Malaysia.

Despite being only 9 years old, this school is the education ground for students of over 20 nationalities. This school richness in culture had pulled me out of my old box and placed me outside into a different environment where I widened my personal perspectives of the world. I made many friends, and now, they are family. We all teach here and we learn at the same time.

The Australian International School Malaysia created a clear image in my mind of what it’s like to be in a harmonic multicultural society. I gained experience and knowledge from this school. An experience I will never forget”

My 10 months here so far at AISM has been an experience like no other. I have made so many new friends from all over the world; not only from Australia but also from New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Iran, the list goes on. The diversity of the AISM community has enabled me to learn more about the cultures of others first-hand as well as share some of my own.

One of the things I like about AISM is the flexibility in choosing which subjects to study from the wide variety of subjects offered. I had the opportunity to study Business Studies and Economics (subjects which have always interested me but as I took the pure science stream for SPM I had not studied them) in addition to Physics and Chemistry. Besides that, there are also many extra-curricular activities to participate in. For example, I played the lead male role in the Senior School Production 2008, am an International Award participant, Model UN member and was involved in many other school activities such as the Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival, and Cross Country.

In short, I believe that AISM has a lot to offer and if you would like to experience AISM, I wish you all the best in your scholarship application.

 Manu Menon  (HSC 2009)

I had high hopes that my first few weeks at AISM would be warm and welcoming and was not disappointed by any measure once I arrived. Everyone which includes the students and teaching staff were very friendly and were more than happy to help me get used to the environment in an international school. I was happy to see how everyone could get along although they came from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. They seemed oblivious to their differences and were very approachable. I had a splendid time getting to know my new friends from all around the world. Friends whom I would have never met if not given this scholarship to study at this international school. Although I found it hard to find some common ground during conversations with certain people, we all got along perfectly well once our syllabus began and we started to know about each other. It was fun listening to students who had their stories to tell. These stories were often based on where they came from and it was both entertaining and enlightening.

The teachers here at AISM are among the best teachers I have met. They constantly make me figure things out on my own instead of spoon-feeding me the information. By doing this, I am forced to research information on my own and I find that I learn more by acquiring information in this manner. The teachers are also very approachable and are ever-ready to give tips on how a tackle a particular area of study or how to allocate time to ensure that all the assessments get done on time. Most teachers here also encourage students to participate in class. I was particularly hesitant at first but am slowly mustering up the courage to raise my hand and give my input during classes. It can sometimes be rather daunting but I am sure I’ll be able to cope.
My stay here at AISM so far has been a good one. I enjoy the company I have in school and the syllabus being taught by the teachers. I have also taken part in the athletics carnival which was a fantastic experience and very different from the one I had at my previous school. All I can say for now is that I hope my stay here will continue being as great as it has been for the past nine months I have been here so far. And in year 12 we also get to wear burgundy shirts that have the power to cut line in the canteen and other very beneficial things.
I’m currently doing Spanish as an extra-curricular activity and am enjoying every minute of it. It is a fantastic experience.  The swimming carnival was a new experience. Everyone had a splashing good time.  Classrooms here are air-conditioned! Studying has never been so cool.
