Our parent community is a diverse and welcoming group. About 30% of our parents are Australians, another 30% from 36 other nationalities and 40% are Malaysian nationals.
Many new parents at the Australian International School Malaysia (AISM) find connecting with other parents is a great way to help both themselves and their children settle in.
How parents can get involved
Every morning or afternoon, parents who drop off or pick up their children often stay and use our Parents' Room or chat with other parents at the Cabarita Café. These informal gatherings are often great ways make new friends, as existing parents are always keen to help new parents who need support or advice.
We enourage parents take part in school activities and they are always invited to school assemblies and other regular performances.
The primary ways to get involved are through our Parents’ Association, by volunteering as a class parents, area link parents, language link parents or to help in the library.
The Parents Association (PA)
The AISM PA aims to build a strong relationship between the school, parents and wider community.
We encourage all parents to join the PA to:
- Help with a range events and support activities that promote a strong school community
- Have your say as part of our parent group on major school decisions and reviews when requested.
The AISM Parents’ Association helps build a community of families that care for each other from the settling in process and beyond.
By helping teachers, setting up language groups, and organising events such as cofffe mornings and bake sales, and volunteering at school and social events, I have settled in to our fabulous parent community.
We are a team of supportive parents and all help is welcomed and accepted no matter how big or small.
We all have our children’s best interests at heart. A successful Parents’ Association will benefit all children as we are helping our devoted and supportive teachers and administrators.

Events our parents participate in
Throughout the year the PA holds fundraising events including:
- Bake sales
- Cool off stalls for sporting events
- Mother's Day stalls and the Father’s Day Breakfast
- Sausage sizzles and Trivia Night.
We also help with special event days, such as International Day, the Walkathon and more. Volunteers for these are always welcome.
Our PA office holders
The PA Committee currently consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 2 committee members. Nominations for these positions are requested in February and then announced at the AGM held in March each year.
The current office holders’ photos and names are displayed on the PA noticeboard outside our main school reception. You will often see them around the school, so please say hello! They are also always happy to help out with any questions you have. You can also contact the PA by email.
When are our PA meetings held?
PA meetings are held held in the library at 9.00am and the dates are listed on the Term Calendar.
The meetings are usually attended by the AISM’s Principal, the Heads of Junior School and the Head of Middle and Senior School.
Any parent can attend these meetings as it is a great opportunity to hear first hand discussions between the school’s management and the parent community as we address items raised and plan the upcoming events.
Get in touch with the PA
Please email the PA or approach an office holder directly if you have any questions.
Class parents (Junior School) and year level (Middle & Senior School) representatives
Our class parents support their home room or class teachers. This might include emailing class parents to remind them about upcoming events and excursions. They may also arrange coffee mornings or lunches for class parents to help new and old families build new connections.
At the beginning of every school year the PA asks for volunteers to take on these roles. In the Junior School we have a class parent for every class, while in the Middle and Senior School we request a year level parent for each year group.
If you are unsure of who your class parent or representative is, or you’d like to volunteer, please get in touch with our Parents’ Association.
Helping new parents settle in - area link parents
When first moving to Kuala Lumpur, many of us have found it valuable to have a contact in an area near to where we live. We have a network of parents who live in different areas, and can help you find things you need, particularly when setting up your new home.
Get in touch with our PA and we will find an area link parent to help you with the settling in process.
We welcome more area link parent volunteers, so please email us if you can help.
Help for parents with non English speaking backgrounds - language representative parents
A language representative (rep) parent can help you with general enquiries about AISM or living in Malaysia. They are a parent who volunteers to be the point of contact for new or prospective parents of the same language and/or cultural background as you.
Currently our language rep parents include Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish and Korean speakers. If your language isn’t listed, please ask.
Get in touch with our PA to ask for a language rep parent contact or to volunteer.
Our parents regularly volunteer their help to the library where their support is greatly appreciated in covering books and organising displays. Please see library staff to find out more.
