We build global leaders with real life opportunities

Australian education has produced more than its fair share of business leaders. At AISM we provide the training and opportunities to develop a new generation of global leaders.

The Australian curriculum challenges your child to develop their own thoughts, ideas and opinions.  Our students are challenges to recognize situations requiring change, and to then find and implement solutions. This equips our students to be leaders in their field or their community.

Every student has informal opportunities to lead, as well as formal leadership opportunities for your child including:

  • Male and female Captains and Vice-Captains for each school – Junior, Middle and Senior
  • Prefects in the Senior School
  • House Captains and Vice-Captains for each of our four houses and for each school – Junior, Middle and Senior

All our leaders are elected by their peers.

Other leadership opportunities in our school include the Student Representative Council,  co curricular leadership development activities, the International Award and the Year 12 annual retreat.

The Student Representative Council  

We encourage and develop student leaders through our Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC fosters personal growth, team work, leadership skills and motivates students to actively support their school community in a positive way.

Our SRC has a democratically elected class representative from each class from Years 1-12. This group meets regularly to discuss and deal with issues impacting students.  Our SRC also organises events that engage and encourage all our students to participate in school life.

All student leaders are celebrated and recognised at the annual Honours Morning Tea.

Leadership development

Student leadership opportunities are also supported and fostered through our extensive co curricular activities program where students are supported in displaying leadership skills in a range of sporting, creative and academic co curricular activities.

Activities that develop leadership include Model United Nations (MUN), the annual The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Singapore Conference and the World Scholar’s Cup.

International Awards (The Duke of Edinburgh)

The International Awards are a self development programme for 14 to 25 year olds which has an important element of community service. More than seven million young people have undertaken this program across the world.

Students at the Australian International School Malaysia have been participating in this program since 2009, with some achieving the top award, the Gold Award in previous years.The Duke of Edinburgh International Award Programme has three levels, each one requiring a greater degree of commitment.

  • The Bronze Award is for those students over 14 and the minimum period of participation is three months.
  • The Silver Award is for those over 15 and the minimum period of participation is six months.
  • The Gold Award is for those over 16 and the minimum period of participation is twelve months.

To gain an Award, participants must complete activities in four sections for a specified minimum period of time. There is an additional requirement of a Residential Project at the Gold Award level. Participants decide what individual projects they would like to do for each section in order to encourage individual effort and development of personal interests. All students complete a project in all sections, supervised by AISM staff.

Year 12 Trinity College Personal Leadership Program, the University of Melbourne  

This 6 day/5night program offers students with an urban Australian experience, whilst also experiencing one of Australia’s top three universities first hand. It encourages students to be active participants in their learning journey and step outside their comfort zones,with specific leadership training.
