Students tackle woes of the world

YEAR 10 delegates representing 21 countries debated issues such as the H5N1 bird flu pandemic, AIDS management and control, environment, and IT and telecommunications skills for the poor at the seventh annual Year-10 Mini-MUN held by Alice Smith Secondary School (Equine Park) recently.

The event was facilitated by Deputy British High Commissioner to Malaysia Mark Canning and Australian High Commissioner James Wise.

The hall was decorated with the national flags of the various countries and the United Nations colours.

The delegates grappled with critical issues such as over-fishing, the consequences of coral reef degradation, climate change, rising sea-level and the impact of deforestation on soil erosion.

This year, Alice Smith welcomed two new delegations to the Mini-MUN from Australian International School Malaysia (AISM), where they represented Pakistan and the Philippines.
