2008 Activities

Visitors in school
On Friday 19th June we welcomed Datuk Michelle Yeoh, the well known Malaysian actress recently appointed UN Road Safety Ambassador. She joined us for the launch of our Road Safety campaign and spoke briefly on Road safety to our school Assembly. She was accompanied by Datuk Jean Todt, well known in F1 Racing circles.
On Monday 22nd June, we were visited by one of our early teaching couples, Andrew and Cat Burnell who taught in AISM in 2001 on our old campus. Their daughter Lucy, who was born that year and their son Tom joined them. They were taken for a walk around by our school captain Gaia and Vice Captain Yasmin and met up with Peter Syme, teacher number 1 and few of our very early students.

Anzac Day   25th April

Dawn, 25th April – Following the tradition long observed in Australia and New Zealand, Aussies and Kiwis gathered around the world to commemorate the disastrous landing of the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli Cove at dawn on that day in 1915. This year, about 90 students and staff were at the Cheras Christian Cemetery well before dawn to once again mark the tradition. Five of our students acted as wreath bearers in a ceremony which is growing in importance in both countries. A traditional ‘Gunfire Breakfast’ was held at the residence of the New Zealand High Commissioner, with sausages and eggs on the menu, and a tot of rum for the adults so inclined.

The day was also marked with a special assembly at AISM.
Our special guest, Lieutenant Colonel Murray W. Heron
explained the meaning and relevance of  'ANZAC'.

"Throughout this region, many thousands of Australians and New Zealanders are buried alongside their mates from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, India, England and the Netherlands. This holds significant value in regards to the three things that I have talked about. These men and women did not die in vain. They died fighting for what they believed was right and the freedom which we celebrate today. The ANZAC story tells us that we must always be loyal to our country and to our friends, no matter what the cost and to do everything as well as we possibly can."

International Day 2007 Watch this space for the 2009 version.

International Day has come a long way from the humble beginnings we had on our first such day at our old campus in Country Heights. At that point it was an assembly where students were encouraged to wear national and international costumes. It has grown, particularly since we moved to The Mines, to become a full day of displays, performances, food tasting and sport. Each year it grows and becomes more interesting just as our school continues to grow and become more diverse.

You will be pleased  to note that all outfits were carefully coordinated - dancing shoes and dress-up thongs as required for that really top look!
