Welcome Back to Semester 2
Ivan McLean, Head of Middle and Senior Schools
I would like to wish you a very warm welcome back to the second semester, new families and existing families alike! I trust and hope that you all had a restful and enjoyable break.
Students have been very eager to share their exciting holiday stories with their peers and teachers. It has certainly been evident that many missed their friends during the holiday and were very happy to be back at school for Term 3. We welcome approximately 40 new students to the School for the start of Term 3.
We also welcome Mrs Tracey Niesmann, who will be working for a short few weeks in the Performing Arts before the arrival of Mrs Eryn Grady, who will take up the permanent post of Head of the Arts. In addition, we welcome Mr Michael Lewthwaite, who has joined us as our Head of Mathematics, and also Mr Christopher Shortreed, who will be teaching Mathematics as well. They are very excited to be here and look forward to working with our students.
Congratulations to all of our students who competed in the World Scholar's Cup during Term Two and during the holidays in the World Round. All students performed exceptionally well and there were a number of individual and team medals that were awarded to our students in both the Junior and Senior Divisions. Thank you to Mr Broadbent and Ms Stavenuiter for guiding our students through this wonderful educational challenge.
Congratulations must also go to the Asia Pacific Science Forum students in Years 8 to 10 who have travelled to Taiwan during the first week of school this term. Students were invited to represent their country from all over Malaysia, and an AMAZING five out the six representatives currently representing Malaysia in that forum are from AISM!
On Monday of next week, a revised document for Semester 2 will be shared with MSS students and parents with the “Semester 2 Course Outlines” and “Assessment Calendar”. The documents will contain a brief course overview, assessable outcomes and assessment tasks for each subject within the year level. These documents have been developed in order to ensure easy accessibility of information for students and families in one area and help sustain excellent communication between home and school.
I would like to highlight a particular change made to the School Calendar and announced in this week’s e-News; namely the date of the MSS Swimming Carnival for 2016. As we are bound by specific dates in which to host our Year 12 examinations, it was evident that the Year 12 students would not be able to participate in their final Swimming Carnival without a change of date. Hence, we have moved the Carnival to TUESDAY 16 AUGUST (Week 5 of Term 3). This still gives sufficient time for the School Team to be formed and prepare for the Inter-School Swimming Carnival.
I wish all students a great start to the semester and for the exciting times ahead. I also wish all of our Year 12 students all the best as they prepare to sit their Semester Two (Trial HSC) examinations during the period from Monday Week 3 to Monday Week 5 of this term. Please remember to keep quiet around the Auditorium during that time so as to provide the optimal environment for our students in which to sit their examinations.
International Day 2016
One of our very special days on the calendar is fast approaching - AISM International Day 2016 (Friday Week 6, 26 August 2016). During the day there will be a range of activities and performances to highlight the many diverse cultures within our school community. The Parents Association has offered to assist again with the “Around the World Food Tasting”, for which we are very grateful. If you would like to help out on one of the food teams, please contact Liesl Reichelt or Angela Werner through the PA address.
Students are encouraged to dress up in national costumes from any country. We will also be celebrating the Olympics as a special theme this year. It is certainly a spectacle to see so many children dress to represent such a great variety of nations. The Chin students will also be joining us on the day and will participate in the activities and also provide a cultural demonstration.
A full schedule of events will be sent out to parents closer to the day. Parents are more than welcome to attend our assembly and showcase event.
