Dr Priest's Maths Enrichment group introduced the Mayan Number System

Ms Kylie Booker, Director of Curriculum and Innovation

Every fortnight Dr Priest has been extending a group of talented Years 6 and 7 mathematicians. She facilitates challenging activities that make the students think creatively and divergently. Students who are bright at Mathematics are accustomed to quickly working towards the correct answer in familiar situations so it is important that the situations are unfamiliar, interesting and engaging. These students will work with Dr Priest for Semester One. This week the students were introduced to the Mayan numeral system which uses vigesimal (base-20) positional notation used in the ancient Mayan civilization to represent numbers.

Enrichment and Extension

Our philosophy at AISM is to enrich the curriculum and to provide opportunities which extend and challenge all students.

Enrichment and Extension @AISM

Enrichment and extension opportunities at AISM are numerous, diverse and available at all Year levels from the Junior School through to the Middle and Senior School. We aim to offer something for everyone and believe that all students should have access to enrichment and extension activities.

We provide these opportunities through

  • an extensive co-curricular programme of cultural, academic and sporting activities
  • gifted and talented programmes
  • outdoor education programmes (Year level camps and International Award)
  • service learning programme
  • leadership development
  • participation in inter-school events and competitions
  • support for digital literacy and independent eLearning
  • school-wide activities such as Science Week, Languages Week, Book Week, Japan Day, International and Team Building Days
  • Visiting authors, speakers and assembly and lunch-hour talks and presentations
  • a global and international awareness and focus
  •  a multi-cultural school culture

These opportunities are additional to the differentiated learning programmes in timetabled classes which also provide enrichment and extension.

The culture of AISM is to develop confident young students who are motivated to achieve their potential and who leave school with a genuine love of learning and an enthusiasm to share their talents and abilities as global citizens.
