ELC Mat Chat Sessions

This term the ELC children have been taking part in weekly ‘Mat Chat’ activities with the help of their parents.

Each week the children chose a picture book to take home and share with their family. This book was kept for a whole week. During this time the children were encouraged to share this story with a parent every night . The sharing activities ranged from talking about the pictures, listening to the story, retelling or acting out the story, drawing pictures and even doing little mini activities related to the storyline. (Let’s not overlook the obvious cuddle benefits of sharing a story every night!)

Each week, the children returned their book along with any activities they chose to complete, and shared these in small groups run by our wonderful parent volunteers.

Here are some photos of the children sharing their thoughts and ideas.

Research has proven that sharing the same book with your child over a number of nights helps to develop a number of pre reading skills, including:

• Prediction
• Oral language skills
• Sequencing skills
• Questioning techniques
• Left to right print orientation
• One to one word correspondence.
• Understanding of rhythm, rhyme and sentence structure.
• Inferential and literal comprehension.
• Confidence
• Creativity
• Vocabulary

……… and the list goes on!

ELC visits Science Lab

It was an opportunity for the ELC students to go on a science adventure this week. The students learnt about safety equipment and tried on lab coats and safety glasses. They certainly looked the part! Some of our Year 12s donated their time to help guide the ELC students through a range of small activities organised by our brilliant lab technicians. The future of Science at AISM is already looking very promising!
