Glen Emslie, Service Learning Coordinator
It has become a tradition at AISM that the end of each year is celebrated with “The Giving Tree” Assembly, as a way we can say thank you to those who have contributed to helping make our school a better place and also give to those in need. In this very unusual year, this tradition will continue but in a slightly different format!!
This year, students are asked to contribute to this Service Learning opportunity in three ways:
The purpose of the Giving Tree gifts is to show our love and support to children who have very little, by giving them a small present.
This year the gifts will be donated to the:
Chin School Organisation - a not-for-profit organisation that provides education and support to the Myanmarese refugee children from the Chin state.
Shepherd’s Centre Foundation - a not-for-profit organisation, which supports at risk children, teenagers and families across Malaysia.
We are encouraging students to buy a gift for someone their own age. For example a Grade 4 boy would buy a suitable gift to donate to a Grade 4 boy.
If all students buy a gift for their own age group and gender, we know we will have a diverse range of gifts to donate. Perfect! Wrap the gift and when you come into the school for the SPECIAL VISIT DAY, there will be boxes labelled with different age-groups near the Breezeway. Please select the age-group that your gift is suitable for and place it in that box. Your gift will be distributed to a child from the Chin School Organisation or the Shepherd’s Centre Foundation.
Gift suggestions are:
- Colouring books
- Slippers/flip flops
- Football shirt/socks
- Playing Cards/Uno

Another long standing Service Learning tradition at AISM has been the Service Team Hampers. This is an opportunity for the AISM community to say thank you to our hard working gardeners, cleaners and security staff. In this particularly challenging year for all of us, these wonderful people have been doing it particularly tough, so it is a good opportunity for us to show our generosity.
Students are asked to bring in one non-perishable food or personal grooming item and place it in the hampers provided.
Hamper suggestions are:
- Rice or Noodles
- Coffee or Tea
- Cooking Oil
- Snacks/Nuts/Dried Fruits
- Dry goods
- Sweet Treats
- Tinned products (NO meat products please)
- Personal grooming items
The Matilda Project was introduced in 2010, as part of the AISM 10 Year Celebrations. As such, this has been one of the major ways the community of AISM contributes to the wider community for 10 years. The Matilda Project provides sponsorship to the Asrama Desa Pukak Hostel in Sabah. The hostel is managed by the Good Shepherd Services and provides a home for students who live in remote parts of Sabah. It enables students to attend school regularly and access education in a long term,
Many of the children who stay at the hostel have to walk long distances to attend school. This is too difficult to do twice every day. Staying at the hostel means they can attend school regularly and complete a higher level of education. The hostel uses the money to purchase essential items such as rice, powdered milk, veggies, school uniform and basic school equipment. It also pays for the house mother’s wage.
This year we planned two fundraising events for the Matilda Project, the Walkathon and the Tabloid Sports day. Unfortunately, neither event was able to take place due to the MCOs. However, students have been encouraged to continue their fundraising efforts for this very worthwhile cause. So now it’s time to pass over the money that has been collected. To do this, there are two options:
Deposit the money in the school bank account (details below); or
Drop it off in the box provided when you come into school (yes, another box!)
Please email to the Finance Department a copy of the bank remittance advice together with the student’s details and stating MATILDA PROJECT to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you to the AISM community for supporting “The Giving Tree”!!
