Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School
AISM Junior School couldn’t be prouder - we have proven our strength as a community of learners throughout Term 2.
Our continuity of learning program has been an amazing learning journey for us all. Not only have we learnt new skills but I believe we have all learnt something new about ourselves - our capabilities as we have taken on the “I Can” philosophy!
To sum us up at AISM -
“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success” - Henry Ford
From our ELC through to Year 5 we asked the students to reflect on their online learning experience - the good, the bad and where to go next.
What do you miss the most from school?
“I miss our school and doing “Area in Maths” at school” - Thomas
“I miss playing with my friends” - Edward
“I miss doing maths at school” - James
What do you enjoy about school online?
“I like doing meetings. Whenever it’s a meeting day I’m so excited because I want to see everyone” - Thomas
“My favourite part of school online is writing on the iPad because it’s like magic” - James
And Ms Dani misses her class and can’t wait to see them back in the classroom!
Year 1 has learnt so much about how to use their device, lots of mathematics and how to try to work on their own...
I am happy and enjoy learning from home, I love seeing Ms Kos, Mr Griffin and Ms Amariah on seesaw and google meets and also Mrs McLean - I like doing maths and writing because it is so much fun. I love spelling - learning new words - there’s nothing that I don’t like. I love everything that my teachers give me to do. I miss special times with my friends and teachers and I miss my school! - Charmayne
I like not having to worry about being late for the bus in the morning, I don’t have to get up as early. I like spending more time with my family. I don’t like getting into trouble off Mum and Dad when I take too long to finish my lessons. I miss my teachers and friends at school. I am looking forward to seeing everyone when we get back to school and having lunch in the canteen, I hope it is soon. I miss playing on the monkey bars with the other kids. - Davinah
Geoffrey is working from home and likes his google meets with Ms Kos and Mrs McLean. I only like important activities - My favourite activity is Mathematics, Spelling , Music and PE. I miss seeing my friends at school. I am soooo excited about Year 1’s Got Talent - I will perform cooking and piano. - Geoffrey
Year 2 have loved the videos, the bitmoji classroom and their creative teachers...
I loved the online class and teacher’s kindness.
When I was in Term 1, I had to use Google Translator to translate English to Chinese. But during Term 2, I know more words. When I have a question, I can read and understand it without translating the language to Chinese.
During the continuity of learning program, I missed all the things at the school. Especially the playground. In the online class, there is everything but no playground. I missed handwriting each morning and all of my friend’s at school too. I look forward to fun learning activities like when we learnt multiplication, we put skittles on paper and made arrays. - Rebecca
What I have missed is that I can’t see my friends. What I loved about school online is that I can do fun things. What I want to do when the school starts is see my friends and do some work. - Yuka
I am looking forward to Writing and Reading because we can learn about information text and acrostic poems. I have missed playing with our friends and drawing spectacular drawings. I have enjoyed learning my Writing because I can learn lots of things like reflecting and more. Thank you all teachers for your hard work and giving us lots of chilly work. - Charlotte
Year 3 has embraced online learning and enjoyed their meets and growing their tech skills...
I think online schooling has been ok but definitely not as much fun as being at school. Some highlights for me have been sleeping in. I would normally get up at 6am to do barracudas. I enjoy wellbeing hour and having google meet sessions where I can see everyone in my class. Some things I have not enjoyed while being at home are not seeing my friends and teachers, missing my CCA’s and PE isn’t as fun as it used to be. When the MCO is lifted and we go back to school, I’m looking forward to seeing my teachers and playing with my friends, being able to travel again so I can visit my family in Australia and no more coronavirus!! While I have been at home, I have learnt how to sketch and I think I’m pretty good at it. I’ve learnt how to use seesaw better and improve my coding skills. I have also discovered I can work really well on my own unsupervised. - Kaine
Online learning is quite fun. I like it because I don’t have to travel that far and the classroom is just downstairs. I also get to play whatever I want and I don’t need to wait for people to finish doing work. The downside to doing online learning is that I can’t see my friends and I get bored quickly. I miss school very much and miss talking about weird stuff that happened to me to my friends. I’m looking forward to starting school again and getting serious about work. I am looking forward to the online learning to stop because I already have enough screen time. I realised that my talent was making jokes when I read my brother’s joke book. Then I made some of my own. If I could change something, I would make illness out of existence because I am tired of staying at home. - Ayra
Year 4 has grown to be more independent and like setting their own timetable!
So far the things that I have loved about Continuity of Learning is that we get to use our new iPads a lot more than we would at school. Another thing that I love about continued learning is that you can finish the lessons at any time, and in the afternoon we get extra time to finish work, I also like not rushing in the morning or sitting in traffic. It is also really nice being able to spend more time with my family. What I haven’t liked about lockdown is : that I can’t see my friends in person, I can’t get help all the time from teachers, we can’t do things together in class and I can’t play around the awesome School.
The thing that I’m really excited about when we go back to school, is that most things will be back to normal,I get to play around with my friends again, and I get to play around with the play equipment and hopefully start some of our fun CCAs again. When we are back on campus I would like to see the playground reopened, I’d like to see lots of happy smiling teachers as they see their students together again, I’d like to see people playing wonderful games and having lots of fun and I would like to see a clean, trash free school. - Gabe
I like continuity of learning because I love doing Inquiry because I love learning about science. I can do the experiment together with my sister. But I am bored staying at home for such a long time and cannot go back to school.I miss my friends, teachers, and the school canteen (my favourite food, sunny side up eggs, sausages and pasta). I miss my soccer team members. I hope I can go back to school soon so that I can play with my team members. I am looking forward to the lockdown to be over soon. When I go back to school, I hope to see the green field and I can play on the field. Last but not least, we have to take care of ourselves, wash our hands frequently, and wear masks. - Josh
I think learning from home is pretty annoying, but I think that all the staff at AISM have been working hard to continue our education for all of the students. Learning from home is a gigantic obstacle but it just makes us stronger and more adaptive to bad situations. I’ve missed everyone that usually sees me every day during school hours, and not being able to inquire and get an answer very quickly when we ask something. I have also missed playing on the playground and playing games on the climbing structures. There are a million more things that I miss but that takes too long. I’m looking forward to bike riding to school with my school friends. When I get back to school I will enjoy playing with my friends and playing four square as well, I will also be SUPER happy to see all my teachers and greet them in person. I would like to see people reuniting with each other and telling each other about their experiences and adventures during the lockdown! One thing I would like to see the most is having a little bit of social distancing though, because it might not be over yet and nobody wants to get sick. - Chloe
Year 5 have become keen, independent learners and developed greater ownership and agency of their learning...
I have enjoyed staying at home so I can see my Mum and Dad all the time and I have enjoyed dressing up in my own clothes. I also liked sitting next to my dog and him becoming a 5W member. I have missed meeting my friends and playing on the field but I still get to run around outside my house in the mini garden or on the road. I really want to go back to school and run down the grassy slopes. I would like to see my friends and my teacher and I would like to be working with my friends next to me so I can ask them how to do stuff. I really want to eat the canteen food again, especially the frozen yogurt. - Delisha
We personally feel that online learning has been a helpful and effective way to continue our education. We think this is because as Grade 5 students we have already been taught the skills to be independent, conscientious learners. The only problems have been when there are technical issues like the internet cutting out or google meet not letting some people log in. We would be very happy to continue online learning with a return to campus - how to do both? - that’s the question. - Isabelle and Chong Yong
I have loved online studies because I get to sleep in more, the great experience of it all, getting to do work at my own pace and most of all relaxing in class by laying down or sitting on the sofa while I finish a maths lesson (or should I not say that). I have missed lots of stuff with face-to-face learning at AISM. I have missed instant feedback, basketball, but mostly friends. Although I miss these things a lot, it is still great to have had this experience, this Covid-19 experience. When I go back to school I would love to see children playing and enjoying themselves (me included) but I would also love to see everybody being sensible in a way that students wear masks, we stay a certain distance away from each other and use hand sanitizer or wash our hands regularly. See you back at school real soon! - Levi
In wandering the streets of AISM - beginning to plan for our return - I can only agree - I too would like to see the smiles on
everyone’s face (perhaps through a mask), hear the laughter as we reconnect and once again see our visible learners in action!
One week until the end of term and holidays. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday - hopefully see you soon!
