KL Junior Maths Competition
Michael Lewthwaite, Head of Mathematics
Mary Ann Grant, Mathematics Teacher
The 10th edition of the KLJMC, which was supposed to happen in 2020, was run on Saturday 22 May 2021. The event was hosted by St. Joseph's Institution International School Malaysia as a virtual event. How times have changed! St Joseph’s did a magnificent job to get this competition up and running in this format and the competition ran very smoothly.
There were around 80 participants in Years 7-8 from schools all around Kuala Lumpur.
Our students were online at around 8:45am and were quickly into the “crossnumber” competition. This was a team event where students were all able to see and edit the document and discuss via a Google Meet. Ms Grant and I were able to hear their discussions, which were both fascinating and enjoyable; even when there were comments such as “What’s a triangle number again?” Three of our four teams managed to completely solve the crossnumber, with the team of Lucas Zhen-Yu Yip, Chengjun Han and Akmal Aiman Akmal Hakim solving it without any errors!
The second event was an individual event where the students had to respond to 20 questions in 60 minutes. Lucas Zhen-Yu Yip ranked second in Year 8 and Claudia Dobson ranked second in Year 7. Chengjun Han was ranked 9th in Year 8 and Levi Chandra 11th in Year 7 (even though he’s only in Year 6!)
The final event was “Pass it on” where the teams were split into a pair and a single and each had to solve a question and pass the answer to the other. There were 4 sets of 4 questions and they had 8 minutes to complete each set!
It was a fun morning, I mean, how could you not have fun doing maths! One of the students remarked that they’d been on the Google Meet for over 4 hours. Time does fly when you’re having fun. I’m sure it was a wonderful learning experience for all involved, even though some of them admitted some of the questions were challenging!
Congratulations to all involved. You represented AISM with distinction!
