Ivan McLean, Head of Middle and Senior Schools
Our first few weeks of Term 3 have been busy for students and families as we settle back into school routines, homework and preparation for the “business end of the year”. This past fortnight has also been a very busy time for our Heads of Department as they prepared Subject Outlines, Assessment Calendars for this semester - AND also subject documentation and videos for our Subject Selection process for 2021. My thanks to all of the staff involved for their wonderful work. Our Head of Humanities, and Careers and Pathways Coordinator, Mr Chris Broadbent, spoke to students in Years 8 and 10 (along with myself and Mr Unsworth) to prepare students for Subject Selections over the next few weeks. Our new format this year is socially distanced, but we have managed to ensure the same level of information and access to staff for questions and advice. These subject choices are very important and advice was given about the need for students to consider what they will really enjoy studying in the future and also what they will be successful in studying. As a follow-up, Mr Broadbent will also interview Year 10 students to discuss and ultimately confirm subject selections for 2020.
In addition to the information received on subject selection, students and families have been invited to partake in the forthcoming online University Fairs. Representatives from all major universities in Australia, the United Kingdom and also from South-East Asia, will be “virtually” present. Students will be able to gain valuable information on courses offered at more than 50 institutions; which indeed makes it a large University Fair. I hope that our students and families will appreciate and fully utilise this valuable time and opportunity to investigate potential university pathways and courses, especially those who are seeking to make informed choices about subjects and setting goals for tertiary study.
Finally, at the beginning of this week our first Year 12 student to participate in a Trial HSC examination sat two examinations. In the matter of another fortnight, the remainder of our students will begin their Trial HSC examinations. I wish all Year 12 students well for the duration of their examination period and urge them to prepare well, sleep well and stay healthy. The Whole School helps them by following the SOPs in place, and I thank everyone from the ELC to Year 12, parents, staff and families, for remembering that safety and hygiene play a crucial part in allowing our Year 12 students to focus on their studies.
