Year 3 Enquiry
Kosalay Pather,Jeremy Cox and Amariah Chep
Our amazing Year 3 learners have done an amazing job settling into online learning. They are pros! Over the last few weeks, we have been very busy learning and having fun. Here is a little overview of the activities in which our learners have been engaged.
In Mathematics, we have been focusing on whole number skills. We have been looking at the place value of numbers up to five digits. In addition to this, students have learned how to order numbers ascending and descending, partition and round. We have also been learning about the concept of position. In particular, how to describe a position on a map by looking at some key phrases, the maps key and scale and how to read coordinates on grid maps.
English / Writing
Watch out parents! Our students in Year 3 are learning about persuasive writing techniques, arguing from our point of view. This term we are focusing on the use of persuasive language, text structure, and the editing process. I think we have some great Lawyers in the making! Check out their work below.
Inquiry Unit - Unity in Diversity
This term’s unit describes and explains how significant individuals, groups and events contributed to changes in the local community over time.
Questions we will be focusing on are:
1. What is culture?
2. How does history impact cultures around the world today?
3. How are the lives of children similar and different in global communities?
To introduce the unit, Mr. Cox planned an exciting provocation. Students needed to move planets as Earth was becoming no longer liveable. The Earth dwellers were asked to choose a spaceship that would take them to one of two planets. Viridi Pila in which all inhabitants had no culture and follow strict rules, or Rosea Terram where inhabitants were able to choose their own way of life. After choosing, students had to write a persuasive letter to the President of the planets stating the reasons why they chose the planet and why they would be suitable. The most convincing letters got approval to board the ship and move to their chosen planet.
Through Mindfulness, learners in Year 3 have a goal to display resilience as they continue to develop their academic performance. They do this through meditation and self-reflection. These two traits tie in with our school pedagogy on Visible Learning. Year 3 learners drew themselves as a superhero and displayed their personal strengths as their superpower.
Dress up day and Talent Show
Finally, Year 3 has been having a ball participating and watching the fortnightly talent show. We have students who are masters at playing their musical instruments, amazing singers, magicians and acrobats! What a bunch of talented kids!
We hope you have enjoyed hearing about what’s happening in Year 3.
