Learning beyond the classroom
Outdoor education and excursions, or field trips, are an important part of the Australian curriculum.
There is strong evidence that engaging in the outdoors and practical field trips can foster independence, self esteem, communication skills and add value to classroom learning. Our school camps also focus on peer group bonding and the excitement of practical learning in a safe and nurturing natural environment. Our students also learn new skills, engage in challenging activities and develop teamwork skills.
All our teachers are experienced in providing outdoor recreation and camp programs for students.
In the Junior School, we develop age appropriate independence through camps and outdoor education gradually, in line with the Australian Curriculum. Each class also attends at least one excursion per term that directly links to an area of study – bringing classroom learning alive.
School camps begin in Year 2, with a one night sleepover at our school. Year 3 then has a 2-day camp at nearby locations, with Years 4 and 5 graduating to 3-day camps.
Our students have visited various locations including the beach area of Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan and Lumut, Perak, to small towns in Melaka and Seremban. During these trips, our young learners are empowered to explore confidently and ask questions to make sense of the world they see around them. Activities involve working their classmates and teachers, learning through experience. They also help to developing strong bonds both with their teachers and between classmates.
Middle and Senior School
All Middle and Senior School camps, are usually held in the second last week of Term 1. The focus of each camp is dependent on the year level and is not only age appropriate but is an integral part of our curriculum and pastoral care. All our camps are five days – generally Monday to Friday – apart from Year 6, who go on a four-day camp.
- Year 6 - the camp focuses on team building and resilience
- Year 7 camp focuses on team building and the environment which supports their curriculum
- Year 8 camp focuses on team building and service learning which are both part of the pastoral care program.
- Year 9 are set physical challenges in their camps, with activities that will encourage our students to push themselves to new limits. This helps foster greater self confidence and independence – both of which are important for these age groups. The camp is also linked closely with the curriculum and includes service learning.
Experiential learning in Australia for Year 10 and 11
Year 10 Trip to Boshack Outback, Western Australia
Boshack provides an experience for students to experience outback Australia. Learning in nature, students experience balance of mind and body in a tranquil and relaxing environment without the distraction of mobile phones, computers and televisions. Students are encouraged to focus on getting out of their comfort zone, breaking down barriers, bonding with peers, developing their leadership and teamwork skills, and self reflection.
Activities include team building, leadership and survival skills, orienteering, raft building, canoeing, camp cooking, net fishing, obstacle course, nature awareness, art sketching, bush first aid, sheep mustering on foot, feeding farm animals and learning about Aboriginal culture and early settler history.
Year 11 Leadership Program to Trinity College, The University of Melbourne
Our students experience an immersive urban Australian environment, whilst also experiencing one of Australia’s top 3 universities first hand. Students are encouraged to be active participants in their learning journey and step outside their comfort zones. They participate in leadership, team work skills, public speaking and confidence building workshops. They also further develop their critical and creative thinking, communication, problem solving and goal setting skills.
Activities include teamwork and leadership sessions, public speaking workshops, city sightseeing tour, formal welcome dinner and graduation dinner at Trinity College. During the program the Year 12 group is personally supported by two to three mentors who provide them with guidance and support. Mentors are friendly, high achieving university students who are specifically trained and stay on campus with the students for the duration of the program.
