More than 40 international teachers will gather at the Australian International School Malaysia on 1-4 March, 2018 for a WIDA International Institute. WIDA is a research center at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, USA. WIDA serves over 300 international schools worldwide as well as 39 states within the US Consortium. By utilizing high quality, research-based language standards, assessments, resources, and professional learning opportunities around language development, WIDA aims to support educators and multilingual students alike. The WIDA International Institute is an interactive, four-day opportunity for educators to gain an in-depth introduction to the WIDA English Language Development framework in order to help differentiate instruction for English language learners. Melissa Paton is passionate about creating educational equity for English language learners. Her 15 years of teaching experience have been devoted to working solely with students with diverse linguistic backgrounds and to helping all teachers build their capacity for developing students' language within content areas. Her interest stems from an upbringing in a multilingual home where she developed an interest in language, culture and social justice at an early age.
Melissa holds degrees from UC-San Diego and Edgewood College in Literature, English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education. She is a professed math geek and enjoys working with general education teachers in particular to address differentiation and scaffolding for language growth within content areas.
Her focus at WIDA is to bring the WIDA English Language Development Standards to life in the classroom.
Any teacher or administrator interested in WIDA. Schools are encouraged to send teams of educators to build capacity for implementation. Attendance is limited; registration is on a first-come, first served basis.
Participants in this institute will engage with components of the WIDA Standards and Assessment system and explore how it can be implemented in their context. During the institute, participants will use the WIDA standards framework to analyze the academic language demands of content standards at their school and create an instructional and assessment plan based on the needs of their students. Participants will also have opportunities to develop context-specific implementation plans for communication and collaboration with staff members.
Institute participants will also benefit from networking opportunities with international educators both in person and through an online community forum.
